INTERIOR DESIGN - MONOCHROME DESIGN AND DECORATING

By Before The Architect  Copyright 2009 Before The Architect

I am starting a design/drawing service in .... the Texas Hill Country. I was previewing several websites to get an idea of how to go about designing a web site. When I came across yours, I took pause to really read it. Boy, did you lay all of the cards on the table. I love your 19 deadly sins! If I could make a stamp of that, I would place it on the foreheads of several people I know. Great reading and a great web site! Bob

INTRODUCTION TO MONOCHROME DESIGN AND DECORATING

Monochromatic? Oh, dear, don't sit here.

The rage.  The rage.  Long live monochrome style.

Phooey.

Ahh yes, let’s bathe in all-over shades of gray or cream or tan or whatever. What is it with monochrome ‘color’ design and decorating?

Hmm.

‘I’m as dull as this space.’

‘You’re as dull as this space.’

"My decorator loves it, don't you?'

‘I’m red-green and blue-yellow color blind . . . how’m I doing?’

IT'S NOT A BLACK AND WHITE WORLD

America is chock full of cultural differences and distinctions, including coloring and patterning and decorative pieces.  We’re not talking an aficionados’ fortune or a gifted collector’s cache.  Shop and save.  We’re talking you and not your shell.  Whose place is this, anyway?

Eclectic works. To the Missus, it is quintessential American.  Ebullient, to being energetic.  Carefully selective, ranging from simplicity to complexity.  Bold by multiculture, collocation, shape and size and color, style, etc.

EXAMPLES OF NOT-MONOCHROME, IN COLOR OR STYLE

A bedroom sitting space . . . freshly colored wicker; muted throws; bright pillows; Indianesque foot stools; 19th century American bronze lamp and vases; Chinese sculpted rug.

A parlor . . . large, bold still lifes and a few collector-grade dishes; stitch-patterned, cushy peach couches; understated tables; fashionable lamps; a 19th century upholstered chair; a tall, red, Chinoiserie cabinet on stand; and a French, perpetual clock.
