WALL DORMER TRIM DETAIL

1)      Herewith, our clients wanted to know their bounds from our designers’ perspectives when work began on-site with the contractor and subs on several roof dormers, particularly in regard to wall dormer trim.

2)     The purpose of this wall dormer detail item in ismetric was

a)     To offer guidelines to owners and builders for their subsequent deliberations in design, notably

b)     Getting as much window as possible in available wall space

i)       Fitting the window (and its mates) tight between top plates and shed ridge below

ii)    Given a minimum 5 linear inches of let on the vertical from finish roofing to sill plate top of face

iii)  While proceeding within what are to AG reasonable limits and latitudes 

3)     Home design constraints in this application included among others –

a)      Low L2 ceiling

b)     Shed ridge run up high on L2 wall

c)      Paucity of daylighting on L2

d)     Stylistic wasteland of existing 

Comment: This home designer has found this 'in isometric'  format useful in L2 wall dormer applications, particularly when more aggregate glazing area is required in a sleeping area or preferred elsewhere.  Presentations either in plan view or in elevation are tough to grasp visually. 

The dormer sidewalls can be lifted over the plate line elevation to size-up fenestration.  With substantial overhangs, wall dormer rooflines can be shed, gable, or hip.  Please take care to optimize sunlight intrusion with window size and set – maximum in Winter, minimum in Summer – by latitude metrics.
