HOME PLANS - HEADER SCHEDULE

Next time you hire home builders, ask 'em whether the home they're going to build for you will be  with the same quality  materials and methods as they'd use for their own home . . . and watch 'em wiggle.  AG '04

BEFORE

Before The Architect used to see a home plan header schedule now and then, mostly in table format; however, nothing's come across the desktop in time sufficient for that which was in hand to have been lost, discarded, or forgotten about.  So, in their lieu, when you screw up a home building plan header schedule or any other framing member or element of structure, you can be cold-comforted in that you're not alone, certainly not the first -

AFTER

Headers have always been important to home building and home plan sets.  Now more than ever; maybe, now too much.  We've gotten past just having them hold up things.

Now we have them hold up more things when the second story goes on in a remodel.

Now we have them help to fortify a weak return.

Now we might expect them to stabilize ever-increasing expanses of windows and doors in wall segments.

Before The Architect has even seen them wistfully looked to as a form of rafter beam in lieu of ceiling structure otherwise chopped up with big trays and vaults.

Before The Architect takes a hard view of header home designing in home plans.  Their approach is more text-oriented than table-oriented, giving leeway judgment on matters of material though only on the side of greater and not lesser performance metrics and not at all on application, as you can see for yourself in the following home plan Detail - Header Schedule . . . . . . .

AFTER, HOME PLAN DETAIL - HEADER SCHEDULE, in PDF

Again, please note the extensive, home plan cross-references.

In fact, Before The Architect is even harder than that on its demands of headers as may be annotated in floor plans, framing plans, and roof plans; however, additional burdens on Before The Architect attempts to seize such moments with a keen eye to a key aspect of first-class a home plan design program - redundancy.
