BEFORE THE ARCHITECT – BLUEPRINT HOME DESIGN CONSULTANTS
GREEN IS GREEN, RIGHT?

be a sheep." Albert Einstein

"Have you incorporated "Green" design points in any of your designs?" a prospective client asked.
Depends . . . this home designer has heard the term ‘green’ used variously
If green means durable, then pervasively, yes, and other Before The Architect principles of home designing and home building that address safety and convenience may rub up against somebody or another’s ‘green’ vision or virtue or whatever
If green means less expensive, then not necessarily in the short run
If green means notions like carbon neutral and the like, then no, at least not consciously
If green means making sure no toilet rolls go in the bogrooms, no way
If green means toadying up to buck-sucking vote vultures in the Beltway or anywhere else, then double no way
Looking out from underneath the author' rock . . .
The economist in him harbors grave doubts as to the efficiency and efficacy of such notions beyond financial benefit to the players and purveyors and to the detriment of the put-upon, stemming from his co-authored and never-published book on the economics of the ecology movement way back when . . . could not find a publisher with stones . . .early Gore-Gorbachev era
The pragmatist in him knows that product choice is a multi-faceted function, the practice of which has so far invariably been a singularly strong suit of knowledge which clients ably and consistently bring to the design and jobsite and they’re welcome to it
The builder in him is wary of anything by way of method or material that has not successfully proliferated 20 years at least - - - a handful of exceptions, please
The designer in him and The Missus very, very rarely choose materials other than by generics . . . a few exceptions may be drawn from those that didn’t bite ‘em ever from the ‘60s or so
The spiritualist in AG thinks that only God can make a tree, that this green biz is more about the perfectibility of man than of goals, of hubris and grasping, of opportunism and sociopathologies
The objectivist in him thinks that earth worshippers, planet pagans, should beware: Nature doesn’t know you; natural elements are indifferent to you – as given to grow you fields of flowers as blanket you in burning ash
The taxpayer in him thinks subsidies suck
The citizen in him thinks that buck-sucking vote vultures might one day wisely be fed poorly, caged continuously, and culled regularly
The individual in him thinks that the 'green' thing panders to aspects of humankind's corruptibility
The strategist in him sees greening as soul control
The tactician in him thinks it's hard to tell whether green is good for more than a sales pitch
The businessman in him thinks that green may be akin to a giant pet rock of yore, and that most of it will not endure except by force of governance
The marketer in him thinks that green's peddlers would be well-advised to pedal fast
The patriot in him thinks that going green is a slice of methodology in trashing America
The social observer in him thinks this is yet another national guilt - green guilt
Comment: All this is not to say that AG and The Missus are not inquired upon by clients on aspects relative to both materials and methods of all sorts. They are. And they reply. She-who’s refreshing about the essence and essentials broadly and, especially, design materials and their associations. AG’s . . . well, you know by now.
