WORKING WITH SIPS (A/K/A STRUCTURAL INSULATED PANEL)
Standards of home design and home building are
not about the perfectibility of people; they are about the perfectibility of
goals. Before The Architect
"Have you ever worked with
(design or building) SIPS? If not, would you?" a client prospect asked recently.
Working with SIPS can be akin to a jigsaw
puzzle, everything's supposed to fit together the first time . . .
Nope, never built SIPS or
with SIPS
De novo
building on substantial scale for AG and The Missus largely ended about
1990
From 1990 until 2000
or so, they actively worked with others mostly in home design, repair,
and limited renovation, plus some vitally interesting and formative work
in commercial and light industrial design, repair, and installation as
both consultants and contractors
SIPS as materials were
not part of their palette
In design since about
2000, yep, frequently – more so at perimeter walls than interior walls
Consonant with a point
above, clients work out the version, the sandwich’s makeup
Whomever you select to
work with, working with SIPS requires a few basics to get ‘er done –
Try to leave
nothing to chance – be specific about the size and site of
everything that’s gonna amend the wall planes . . . everything
Hire on
manufacturers, preferably who also install and let ‘em install
Hire on
manufacturers with a local reputation for gracious and considerate
after-market fix-ups – messed-up partitions on delivery, drop ship,
storage, installation; design changes; design misunderstandings;
etc.
