BACKGROUND

Franz Boas once offered that the Inuit had more words for snow than most anyone else, i.e., that culture forms language.  Contested?  Yes. There is no one Eskimo language and ‘snow’ could mean blizzard, white-out, cold and white stuff granular, yucky, etc.  As well, pointedly, Eskimos of any sort may have a hard time coming up with a pile of words for heat wave, don’t you know.

Language proliferates with the interest of the speaker.  So. . . the more a person's or group's interest in something, the more words, the more terms there are for it. 

As a custom home designer, I have a deep and abiding interest in, among other subjects, house style definitions, which, in turn, translate into home plan types. For me, home plan types express people’s way of describing style - aggregative, diverse, and personal.  

House style is identifiable home design. House style [read:  home plan types; house style definition] could be a single, built dwelling, say, Melrose Plantation. As limitedly, house style definition could be of a unique home design, one-off, as in, Adagio or Alisciari, wherewith, once studied, its uniqueness prevails. Or house style definition could be of a time period of home design and home building, say, Jacobethan, Victorian Italianate. House style definition and home plan types for me extend to lifestyle, too, for example, accessible or extended family; and to society, as in, bi-generational; to geography, such as, California Bungalow and Key West Island Style; to materials - panelized, brick; to culture, as, green; to function, e.g., earthquake-resistant, guest; even, rarely, to outstanding home designers, such as, Aboveallhouseplans.com or Greene & Greene.  Home plan types may yet be characterized, for example, affordable, mimetic, and organic.
Why so general in defining house style?  Answer: that's how people select home plans, sort things; it’s the look, the memory, the history, the lifestyle, life stage, the function, adaptation to environment and locale, the land, the neighborhood, the size, family circumstances, health circumstances, the arrangement of spaces, the need, the want, and so forth to his or her own interest in what's under the roof, including the roof itself.

Here's my collection of house style definitions in about 1250 words and terms for home plan types. For sure, there’s a bunch missing and, ok, a few are purely whimsical.  

Think about it: how many words can you add up for, say, cosmetics, clothes, game fish, food, kids, vitamins and minerals and amino acids and herbs and spice, antibiotics, education, felonies, dogs and cats, football?  You know:  important stuff?  1250?

Before The Architect’s custom home plan tend to home types of cottage, English, French, Craftsman, some Italian, and Spanish now and then, another selection occasionally.  This comes with the territory - American, mature, attentive to style, took the time and attention to know what they like and not just like what they know.

This is a pathway to learn how much you didn't know about the realm of home plans, home design, and their immense important to our culture, to learn to know what you like.  You should be able to search-engine most of these entries. A few from this house style definition litany might put you in a good bookstore to get a fuller measure. Some are international.  Others are for standing structures with or without published home plans.  Home plan types can overlap:  we recently home-designed a modern structure with decided, delicious overtones of both Italian Renaissance and Italianate;  another, American Piedmont on the exterior and custom Craftsman on the interior; a Spanish Colonial Revival home with Primitive Adobe semi-detached garage, workshop, and guest quarters.

To extend appreciation of home design opportunities, to develop increasing satisfaction in knowing what you like - that's a big deal to this custom home designer.

Please note the extraordinarily heavy influence of English home design styles over Continental influences - Edwardian, Elizabethan, Victorians - Gothic, Italianate, Richardsonian, etc., - and Tudor, plus derivative influences on Cottage Styles, including but not limited to amalgams, such as American Piedmont and slightly more distanced conjoining of Arts & Crafts Movement, Craftsman, Bungalow, etc.
